  • The nearest source in Boulder (225 miles away) doesn't have an extra firm latex mattress upon which to lie and test, so I have no way to try it out.

When talking to the saatva representative when scheduling the return, she mentioned that I might not feel as if latex would feel hard to me -- that it might not give me enough "push back". Might this be true, even with an extra firm latex mattress? I am talking about IDL's in 38 to 44 range, I think.

  • I have just returned a saatva mattress. I wanted a very firm mattress, and the saatva firm is not so firm. I have slept on a futon for most of my adult life in order to be free of fire retardant chemicals. The exception was for 10 years I slept on a Nikken mattress (not a topper), and that mother was FIRM. However I became mistrustful of sleeping on all the magnets. I have decided that latex may be the best for me, and after I discovered this I found your website. I like what you have to say about latex. I tried a few extra firm coil mattresses in the local Denver Mattress, and they all were no firmer than the saatva firm, except for the Beautyrest Katherina extra firm, but that has fire retardants. Also, now that I have read your comments, I am happy that I have avoided coils all these years.

I am asking advice as to the hardness and softness qualities of the 2 types of latex. I'm looking for a very firm mattress. I have assumed that if I were to get a 6 in. extra firm dunlop mattress without the wool quilting -- only a cotton cover (from Foam Source) that I would be happy. I am also considering a 7 in. talalay ultrafirm. I know that these word labels of hardness are subjective and that different companies use different terms that are not always comparable. Might this be true, even with an extra firm latex mattress? I am talking about IDL's in 38 to 44 range, I think. Then I also wonder if the latex extra firm could be TOO hard. I know firmness is subjective, and you cannot answer for me and my experience, but perhaps you can shed a little more light on this subject. I am 100 lb. woman and sleep alone, and sleep mostly on stomach and a tiny bit on my side. My quandary is will the bed be too soft or will it be too hard. Thank you for any feedback you might give to me. I have had many happy hours reading all that you have to say.
